Galaxy 1 was a Hughes Communications, Inc communications satellite launched by NASA via a Delta 170 rocket. It was the first of eight HS 376 satellites built for the Galaxy fleet, each with a 9-year mission life.
The spacecraft was used for general communications services, such as television relay, voice and data. It was dedicated to cable television transmission across the United States. The fleet’s ground control station is in Long Beach, CA with telemetry and command terminals in Brooklyn, NY, and Fillmore, CA.
For the launches on Delta rockets, each satellite carried a McDonnell Douglas payload assist module that performed the conventional third-stage rocket function of insertion into an elliptical transfer orbit.
